Those women artists who had a significant impact on history and the art world deserve praise for their dogged dedication to their profession and willingness to stand up for themselves and their peers.
We have selected nearly 500 female artists, but it would take many lifetimes to adequately honor all the women who have made significant contributions to art history. These extraordinary women have persevered in the face of widespread pressure to compromise their individuality and originality. From the Realists and Impressionists to the Surrealists and the Abstract Expressionists, from painters and printmakers to sculptors, we celebrate the contributions of women to the arts that have shaped our global culture.
