Eliza Cecilia Beaux was an American portraitist whose subjects included First Lady Edith Roosevelt, Admiral Sir David Beatty, and Georges Clemenceau.

The artist's early life was affected by the loss of her mother, Cecilia Kent Leavitt, barely 12 days after her birth. Her father, Jean-Adolphe Beaux, was also a painter. Beaux and her elder sister Aimée were reared by extended family when their father relocated back to France. Beaux was supported in his early artistic pursuits by his parents and academic institutions.

She received her early education in Philadelphia and continued her studies in Paris under the tutelage of two artists who shied away from the avant-garde—Tony Robert-Fleury and William-Adolphe Bouguereau. She, in turn, did not give in to the influence of impressionism or cubism, instead sticking steadfastly to her unique figurative style. However, her tone was often compared to that of John Singer Sargent, to the point that Bernard Berenson remarked that her paintings at one show were the finest Sargents in the room. She could charm her subjects without deceit and demonstrated an excellent understanding of the character. Like her professor William Sartain, she thought outward appearance might reveal inner nature.

After moving back to Philadelphia, Beaux painted local celebrities such as famous authors, politicians, and artists. She was a professor at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts for many decades. Beaux's paintings were shown all across Europe and America. In 1898, she relocated to New York and bought a summer residence in Gloucester, Massachusetts, quickly becoming a favorite destination for her high-profile customers.

In the 1930s, she was at the height of her fame, having won several prestigious accolades (including the Gold Medal at the 1900 Exposition Universelle in Paris), having two retrospective exhibits, and publishing her memoirs. Beaux was honored in 1933 as "the American woman who had made the greatest contribution to the culture of the globe" by the Chi Omega sorority. First, Lady Eleanor Roosevelt awarded her with the gold medal.

Beaux was the first female professor at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Eleanor Roosevelt praised her as "the American lady who had made the greatest contribution to the culture of the world," The National Institute of Arts and Letters honored her with a gold medal for lifetime accomplishment.

Cecilia Beaux passed away in Gloucester, Massachusetts, on September 17, 1942. She was 87 years old.

Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania's West Laurel Hill Cemetery, is where she was laid to rest. In her testament, she gave a Duncan Phyfe rosewood secretaire created for her father to her adored nephew Cecil Kent Drinker, a Harvard physician whom she had painted as a small kid.

Beaux was featured in the 2018 show Women in Paris 1850-1900 at the Clark Art Institute.
